Why this book

The world wants lithium. Nigeria has it. Most deals still fail.

Lithium powers the batteries in electric vehicles, phones and grid storage. Nigeria’s pegmatite belt, running through Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Ekiti, Oyo, Plateau and other states, produces spodumene and lepidolite. Buyers from China, India, Europe and the United States ask for Nigerian lithium every week.

But money is lost every day on wrong grades, handheld “assays”, fake certificates, lepidolite sold as spodumene, unrealistic prices and cargoes that cannot legally leave the country.

This book explains the minerals, the market, the testing, the processing, the law and the paperwork in plain language. It also gives you the templates to trade lithium ore professionally.

Know your mineral

Spodumene or lepidolite? The answer changes the price.

Nigeria produces both. They look different, they are processed differently and they sell to different buyers. Chapters 2, 8 and 21 show you how to tell them apart and sell each one honestly.

PYROXENE · LiAlSi₂O₆

Spodumene

Looks like
Pale grey, white or greenish; long, splintery crystals
Max Li₂O
About 8% in the pure mineral
Market
Priced against the SC6 (6% Li₂O) benchmark
Main buyers
Converters in China, India, the USA and Europe
Upgrading
Hand sorting, dense media separation, flotation
MICA · K(Li,Al)₃(Si,Al)₄O₁₀(F,OH)₂

Lilac to purple flaky mica, soft and scaly
Max Li₂O
Usually 3–5% in practice
Market
Lower prices; often its own price basis
Main buyers
Mainly Chinese converters, especially in Jiangxi
Bonus value
Rubidium and caesium can add value

Also covered: amblygonite, petalite and the look-alikes (muscovite, feldspar, quartz, tourmaline) that fool new buyers every season.

Pricing made clear

Why 3% ore is not worth half the SC6 price

Lithium ore is priced per unit of Li₂O against the SC6 benchmark, then adjusted for grade, iron, mica, moisture, freight and the buyer’s processing cost. The book walks you through the calculation with real numbers, so you can judge any offer in minutes.

The worked case study follows a 25-tonne trial container of Nigerian spodumene from the yard to the invoice, week by week.

ItemFigure used in the book
SC6 benchmark (FOB Australia)≈ US$2,250/t
Battery-grade lithium carbonate≈ US$19,750/t
SC6 needed per tonne of carbonate7.5–8.5 t
Nigerian 3.0–3.5% Li₂O ore (FOB)≈ US$930/t
Implied payability vs SC6≈ 70–80%

Indicative market figures, September–October 2026. The book teaches you how to price from current data.
